A new wheel based self-propelled anti-aircraft gun system was revealed by China in May 2019 during an exercise conducted by the PLA Army Academy of Artillery and Air Defence, which started on May 17, 2019.
The gun system uses a single 35mm AA gun mounted on an eight-wheel ZBL-09 8×8 “Snow Leopard” Wheeled Armored Vehicle Chassisand is likely to use is likely to be equipped with an electro-optical aiming system. It is believed that the gun can not only counter the conventional aircraft and helicopter threat but could also engage drones and cruise missiles.
The new gun system, referred to as the BK1060 35mm Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Artillery (SPAAA) System by a Chinese defence blog, was shown in a video released on the New china TV Network including carrying out live firing on aerial targets.
While it has been speculated that the gun system CCTV might have already been commissioned into the Chinese military, it is more likely that field trials may be underway before the gun system is fully operationalised.
As with other AA gun systems, the new BK1060 would be effective in ground firing role also. A better assessment of the BK1060 can however only be done once more details are available.
