The New Chinese Surface to Air Missile System
The LY-80 is the export variant of the HQ-16 mobile, medium-range, Surface-to-Air (SAM) Air Defense System and developed by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).
The HQ-16 is reportedly a all-weather medium-long range conditions missile system that can engage multiple targets, such as aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles and other precision guided munitions. The HQ-22 has an effective range of 150-170 km at an altitude from 50 to 27,000m with anti-jamming and anti-interference capabilities.
The missile system is fully mobile with each 6 x 6 Transporter Erector Launcher (TEL) carrying 6 sealed rounds, that are cold-launched vertically. The HQ-16 can be integrated with other Air Defense Systems, such as the long-range HQ-9, short-range HQ-7 and close-range LD-2000 to form a multi-layer Integrated Air Defense System (IADS).
